What Should You Do with Respite Time as a Family Caregiver?

Caregivers in Morton Grove IL

Caregivers in Morton Grove ILMany family caregivers have no clue what to do when they have someone who can take over for them for a little while. This can be frustrating because they have time, and no idea what to do with it.

Run Errands

It can be difficult to run errands with your loved one. She may not try to slow you down, but the very nature of her needs may inadvertently cause that to happen. That’s why having someone with your loved one can free you up to take care of all those tiny errands that you don’t have time for otherwise. You might have your own errands you need to run, too, and you might feel guilty running them when you’re supposed to be doing things for your loved one.

Attend Support Group Meetings

Support groups are an essential part of your own self-care plan as a family caregiver. Attending these types of meetings can help you to realize that you’re not alone and that you have other people you can count on for help and advice. If you’re not already a member of a support group, it’s a good idea to find one now that you can join.

Go to Your Own Doctor’s Appointment

Family caregivers are notorious for skipping their own medical appointments even when they religiously make sure that their elderly loved ones make it to all of their own. If that’s the case for you, you absolutely must make and keep your own doctor’s appointment. Having your own health problems may eventually find you needing your own family caregiver and leave you unable to care for your elderly loved one any longer.

Take Time Just for Yourself

Who says that you have to do something specific with your respite time? As a family caregiver, any down time that you have is likely to be spent asleep. So don’t feel guilty if you want to simply spend time doing whatever strikes your fancy when there is someone else taking care of your elderly loved one. This is not a bad thing at all.

Make it a point to take as much time as you can for respite. You have to take care of yourself in order to take care of your elderly loved one properly.
